Installing a mineral site
Late March into Early February is the time when I begin installing and refreshing mineral sites for deer nutrition. I like to install my mineral sites in a wooded area between hunting areas. I choose not to hunt over mineral sites, but I do use them in an attempt to focus the travel lanes through areas where I will be hunting. One other major consideration for me is location within the property. I like to focus my sites toward the center of the property. I want deer staying on my land rather than venturing onto the neighbors to find what they need.
I installed this site between two food plots, in a heavily wooded area.

I began by removing any debris from the area in which I would be installing the new mineral site

I am a big Fan of the Whitetail Institute of America's 30-06 mineral products. I used both the 30-06 and the 30-06 Plus Protein. After removing all of the debris, I dug an area roughly 3' by 3' and almost 10" deep.

As an experiment, I poured the 30-06 on one side and the 30-06 Plus Protein on the other side.

Mix the minerals in with the loose dirt.
*note - I removed about four shovel scoops of dirt from the area in order to leave a small depression.

I then topped the mix with another coat of minerals.
It doesn't take much time to install a mineral site, but you do want to do it right. Be intentional about your placement and plan with a long term management and hunting strategy. This one site will make a noticeable difference in the years to come.

Like the article, i also add some type of attractant to all my new sites to help the deer find them quicker.

I do this when I install a site in a new area. This site sat between a food plot and a watering hole and was beside a natural traveling path. I did not add a separate attractant, though 30-06 does contain some attractive ingredients.
