Scouting Leases
I spent the second half of my day scouting out possible hunting leases. Unfortunately, I didn't find what I wanted. The first place was a mature pine stand that looked great. It had tons of forage and soft mass, but the trailer park across the boundary line had multiple four wheeler trails leading from it and into the property. It looked like they ride every day through the timber stand. I do not want to deal with that. The second place was in a better location, but half of it was clear cut and the other half was 6 year old plantation. A road bordered both sides of the clear cut and I was worried about shooting towards a road. The timber part was so dense that it would be a couple years before anyone could properly hunt it.
This time of year, lease payments are due. It also means that leases are coming available. You have to be quick if you want to snag a good one. I check daily for openings. The local timber companies will make postings as the come open. I also call friends to keep apprised of openings in clubs. If you want a good place to hunt, you have to work for it.
