Be Ready For Next Season!
BE READY FOR NEXT SEASON!
With Whitetail Seasons almost over or over in a large portion of the US it is time to store your clothes, leftover scents and clean those guns.
I never put hunting clothes or boots or firearms away for the season unless I have cleaned them and made any repairs that are necessary. I wash all of the clothes in laundry detergent for hunting clothing and this means the socks and all too. I use special towels to dry off with when I have showered with my Dead Down Wind products and wash, dry and store them with my clothes. Now whether you seal your clothes in plastic bags, put them in a tightly sealed tub or in a chest be sure to place a few cedar bricks in with them (you can find packages of cedar blocks at most discount stores in the laundry detergent area). This will not only help keep them scent free but will help keep any insects away from them during the long period of storage until they will be needed next for turkey season or in a year for deer season. Same with your boots, clean them as well as you can, treat them with scent elimination spray, let them dry, place a cedar block in each boot and seal them up for the year.
I also wash my Hunter Safety Systems vest in cold water on the gentle cycle. I have purchased a mesh pouch that is used by ladies to wash panty hose and delicate things. These come in all sizes so you should be able to find one in any ladies “specialty” shop (they run about $5 to $10) or in some discount stores near the laundry detergents or dirty clothes baskets. This pouch will keep the vest and all its hardware from tear
ing apart your washing machine, be sure to latch all the buckles before placing it in the bag in the washing machine . I do not place the vest in the dryer but hang it outside on a nice sunny day to dry. It too goes into a scent free sealed bag with a couple of cedar blocks till next season.
Now that your clothes are taken care of and will be ready for next season, time to store all your other gear and products. Look over all your calls, if you need to replace a reed or band do it now so that you will not find out something is a miss on the way to your first day of hunting next season. I make sure all my calls are clean and dry and they are placed in a cedar box for the year. All of my leftover natural scents that can be, are frozen in a double plastic bag. All of my scent free/elimination detergents and personal care products are placed in plastic bags and put into a storage tub (someplace they will not freeze) unless it is a skin cream or hand sanitizer I use all year round. While you are going over your calls and cleaning products it is a good time to take inventory of what you will need for the start of next season and shop for these things over the summer. They usually have these items on sale in June……This will just mean you need to take a few extra visits to the sporting goods store over the summer and might not have to drop a large amount of money a week before the season opens for them.
CLEAN YOUR GUNS and check your bow strings. Many hunters say they will shoot their bows all year and mean to but come August they are rushing around to get as much shooting practice in as possible and do not take the time to check the strings. You might also find better pricing from your Gun Smith or Pro Shop for repairs to your firearms or bowstring replacements just after hunting season is over than two weeks before it opens!!
A half a day of preparation when the season is over will make it easier to be ready for when the next season opens.
HAPPY HUNTING.
