Trip to Treasure Hill
Off to Treasure Hill Outfitter I went on May 3, 2011.
To say the least I was excited and had been anticipating this hunt for many weeks.
The accommodations and property are tops and the game is abundant.
To say the least, the disastrous storms that rocked the South and Mid Atlantic on April 27th seems to have caused the turkey to be completely disoriented as to what is going on during the late hunting season. It is my opinion, and that of Mike Back of Treasure Hill, that the storms wiped out most of the existing nests (Did it in Virginia too) and that the hens were just starting to re-breed and sit new nests. Supporting this thought was the fact that numerous hens were spotted out all day long and if they were on nests they would be coming out to feed at first light and then disappearing until right before dark each day as my host had said they were doing prior to the storms.
The Toms were not vocalizing prior to mid morning on the first two days I was there and morning set up and afternoon run and gun were just not getting us anywhere. We heard birds and when we located them they were in the middle of 100+ acre pastures that offered no route to set up on the birds without detection.
Finally on Friday morning the woods came alive, Toms were gobbling prior to fly down in the morning and staying fired up. Our decoys were set and they had almost immediate company from two Jakes.
The Friday afternoon hunt was cut short with more severe weather moving in.
I must say that the COPPER, yes Copper, color phase that is located on the hunting properties of Treasure Hill Outfitters is something to behold and the picture attached to this Blog does not do the color phase justice. By the way, the photo I have attached of the two birds, the left is a typical Eastern and the bird on the right is the copper phase. Those birds were taken as a double kill by Mike Back’s children.
