2011 Ladies In Camo Hog Hunt by Ken Ledbetter

The Ladies In Camo Hog Hunt was concieved in 2008 by Nock1 (Nancy Jo Adams) and myself as a way to encourage more ladies to join Talk Hunting and to encourage them to get into hunting. Nock1 and I talked to each other, actually we texted each other, while sitting in deer stands on evening hunts before the late afternoon action was due to start. She already had several lady hunters in mind for the hunt. I recuited Cookin (John Thibodeaux) and Cobricon (Brent Sawyer), Talk Hunting Pro-staff members to help out setting everything up for the hunt. We had eight ladies and two spouses attend the first hunt. One hog was taken on that hunt and some great friendship were made.

Brent, John, and I were a little apprehensive on that first hunt. We figured that we would have to do a lot of "baby sitting", boy were we WRONG! These hunters showed up in huge crew cab 4x4 trucks with all the gear any hunter would love to have, plus the ATVs in the beds of those trucks. They had all the gear, but we weren't convinced yet, that was to come. We put the ladies out the first night and there was no one that needed us to sit with them to keep the boogers away! We figured out real quick like, that these weren't lady hunters, they were just plain hunters! They all hunt hard, even to the point of Nock1, Nock another 1, and Cyndi P. going out at 3:30 A.M. on Sunday morning of that hunt and Nock1 took a 130 pound boar at 5:30 A.M. that morning. So, now you understand how this got started, I'll now begin this years story.

We had to go back and forth several times in the Fall to finally set up a date that would fit everyone's schedule. We settled on March 25th - 27th. The ladies all sent me grocery and bait money way ahead of time, so that I could bait the hogs, because it is now legal to hunt hogs over bait in Mississippi. I wanted to raise our odds for success so I started feeding the hogs day old bread in January. In February we started feeding H&S Vita-Rack 26 blocks, hoping the deer would get some of the benifit also. A week before the hunt, I put out two Purina QuickDraw Wild Hog Blocks at each location that we planned to hunt. On March 25th, the day that the ladies were to start arriving, I picked up about 200 pounds of day old bread to suppliment the hog blocks.

I arrived at 10:00 A.M. on Friday morning, loaded down with bait and gear. I unloaded everything and started getting all the campers ready for our guest, we hadn't been to the camp for several weeks, so some cleaning was in order. Brent showed up that afternoon, followed by "Fat Pine" (Tommy Lea C., Talk Hunting member) from Minden, La., Melissa (from Beckville, Texas, where I went to high school). We loaded up the 250 pounds of day old bread and took off to put it out so that things could settle down before the hunt. I had some Pigs Wine that was sent to me by Nock1 (Nancy Jo) from one of her sponsors to try out. I know it help, because it smelt so good. John and Brent want some to put on their pancakes next year. When we got back to camp, I started supper while the gang got their gear stowed and the tent up. Fat Pine decided that she wanted to do a real camp out! With the help of Brent, they got it up fairly quickly. They really needed two tents, for all of the gear that they had!  In the couple of hours before dark, Cyndi, Christy, Carlee, and Don came into camp and got settled in. After supper, we loaded everyone that was there up and put them on the stands farthest to the back of the lease, so that none would be disturbed when we brought the late comers in to get on stand. We put two on the "Shower Stand", two on Elbis' Personal stand and one on the "Ford Tractor Stand". It wasn't long after dark that we heard a shot back at the camp and then we got a text, Cyndi had one down at the "Ford Tractor Stand". Cyndi didn't want to come in, she was wanting another hog!

At about 9:00 P.M. some of the others rolled in and at around 10:30 P.M., Nancy Jo (Nock1) and her crew rolled in. We had little time to get them out before prime time, the late comers got ready and John (cookin), Brent (cobrican) and I (BubbaBrown) loaded them up and got them out on stand. They hunted hard and fought mosquitos for another three hours, no more hogs were taken Friday night.

Friday night, I made a pork and smoked sausage Jambalaya and a big pot of white beans (the ones that HM - Hunt Master loves), this was ready before the first hunters went out and the late comers got to enjoy when they got in from the night's hunt. I say it was 2:00 AM. or so before everyone finally sacked out.

Saturday morning everyone got up at their own time and basically did their own thing, I was personally cripple, just flat out beat. John took it on himself to start breakfast and allowed me to grab a few more winks, I appreciated that!  There were some doing a little turkey scouting, trail riding, and a few hikes taken to find rattlesnakes to fry.

During the day Saturday everyone caught up on rest, did trail rides, and we refreshed the bait at the stands. The hogs had torn up the day old bread we had put out at all stands, which means, that hogs had been at all stands at some time or other. If anyone could have stayed on stand the whole time, they would have seen hogs. Of course that's impossible. The odds were good at this point, but I don't know how the pressure we were putting on the hogs affected our hunt.

Saturday evening, I cooked a big crawfish etouffee for the group. I used eight pounds of crawfish, that's a big etouffe. I made a big pot of rice and we had a huge salad, with all the dressings. Two thirds of that was eaten, which means that someone was going to have some good leftovers! No one loses weight at out camp!

We started putting out everyone before dark on Saturday, this would be a big evening and a long one too. Nancy Jo and Belinda were at the Shower Stand, Don and Carlee were at Food Plot # 4, Tommy Lea and Vicki were at Elbis's Stand, Cyndi was back at the Ford Tractor Stand, Christy was at Food Plot # 6, Kasey was on North # 1, and Andrea was on Food Plot # 8, all good stands with good sign at each stand. I listed stand names because so many Talk Hunting members have been to and hunted at West Fork Hunting Club. Richard (Nock Another 1), Brent (cobrican), John (cookin), and I were around the fireplace listening for shots and to some good old music. Melissa from Beckville, Texas who came for the camping with Tommy Lea (Fat Pine) hung back too was taking care of the fire and enjoying the camp life. At about 9:30 P.M. we heard a shot and shortly after got a text that Belinda had a hog down. We heard another shot a short time later, but got no text as to who shot and what was shot at! At around midnight we heard another shot and got a text that Vicki had shot, but Vicki and Tommy Lea had not gotten down from the stand and would wait on us to find the hog. We saddled up and took off to get the ladies off stand shortly after. We went to the Shower Stand with Nancy Jo and Melinda first, when we got there, she had a hog right out in front of the stand, it dropped in it's tracks where she shot it. It was a nice eating size hog, about 85 lbs. Belinda was some pumped from her harvest and needless to say, we were all proud of her.Belinda and her hog We then went to pick up and look for Vicki's hog. She and Tommy Lea were on Elbis' double stand. We got there and she showed us where the hog was when she shot, we found no sign of a hit, but we looked all over the food plot to be sure. We searched for an hour or so with no luck, she had missed clean. She said that there were several hogs with the one she shot at, they ran every which way when she shot. It happens to the best of hunters. We got back the the camp and took pictures and started to process Belinda's hog and the rest of the group got down to enjoying the grilled hog and venison sausage that John grilled for the gang earlier. We enjoyed the next hour or two of winding down with a nice fire, music, and a few cool drinks before hitting the sack.

The next morning most everyone slept in, trying to catch up on lost sleep and get rested for the long trip home. I fixed up some bacon and biscuits for everyone and we picked up, cleaned up, and then loaded up. Most everyone had gone by noon and I pulled out at about 2:00 P.M. that afternoon. Everyone had a great time and most will want to come back for next year's hunt. John and Brent were outstanding in their help to me and the ladies, from setting up tents to cleaning hogs and there is no way I could have done this without their help. If you ever have a chance to host an event like this, jump on it, it is truly worth the time and effort to have such a great adventure.

Check out the complete album of picture of the hunt at, www.thedeercamp.com , look in the photo albums for the 2011 Ladies Hog Hunt. Again, thanks John (cookin) and Brent (cobrican) for all of your hard work.
